Generally speaking, you get finer control not only over the points, but the Bézier handles as well. Something I want to point out on Glyphs and FontForge: the pen tool is way more powerful in either application than Illustrator. That's not a knock-just the price one might need to pay for it. I spent a good amount of time playing the "where's X feature" game-and while I do eventually find things, it takes me just that extra little bit of work that makes using FontForge feel like it takes more energy and effort. Something I really enjoy and want to add, is the pen tool in Glyphs feels intuitive enough that the jump you make to using it doesn't feel too far from Illustrator.įontForge definitely earns its keep with the price tag, but the big thing you lose is the UI friendliness. It's a very friendly interface and, in the case of Glyphs Mini, strips out everything you don't need which makes getting started even faster. In terms of dedicated font software, the Glyphs apps have it the best when it comes to their learning curve. Personally, I use Glyphs and Glyphs Mini for the bulk of my work and tutorials. Additionally, if you're just starting out, Fontself makes the entire process easy and a bit of fun while you learn more about the design process. Since it's integrated directly in the program, you don't have the fuss of copying and pasting letterforms from one application to another (and that can get messy fast). If you're looking for the best solution that works alongside Procreate and Illustrator (really just Illustrator), Fontself is your best bet. Overall, I'd say Fontforge is decent if you're starting out in type design or a hobbyist but if you plan to make it a career, job or what have you, I'd suggest learning one of the other programs. Took forever but it was pretty badass (sadly I couldn't use the art but I was mostly just testing things out at the time). Actually spent many hours once outlining a piece of anime art and tried it. The documentation is a bit outdated last I checked but fontforge can still allow you to create characters and glyphs for a font from the simple characters and punctuation to ornaments and even logos. Fontforge can be a bit overwhelming to those starting out. It's pretty great for those on a budget of "poor as fuck". The biggest advantage to Fontforge is that it's free. I have seen others use Fontself but I'm not qualified to speak on that program. Only two of them were decent for book typography. I've used Fontforge to design seven typefaces. Hermann Biggs convinced the New York City Department of Health and Hygiene that doctors should report TB cases to the health department, leading to the first published report on TB in New York City in 1893. Similar numbers occurred in the United States. Throughout the 1600-1800s in Europe, TB caused 25% of all deaths. The earliest written mentions of TB were in India (3,300 years ago) and China (2,300 years ago). Archeologists found TB in the remains of a mother and child buried together. And here's the thing: While it's unclear just how useful the getup was, The Public Domain Review says that it's entirely possible that the heavy leather, ankle-length robe might have provided some very real protection against plague-causing factors, like sneezes.TB in humans can be traced back to 9,000 years ago in Atlit Yam, a city now under the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Israel. The stronger the smell, the better it was thought to work, and sometimes, those herbs and flowers were set on fire and allowed to smolder away. The beak was filled with all kinds of herbs and flowers, including mint, cloves, camphor, dried roses or carnations, myrrh, and other pungent herbs. That's where the masks came in: That long beak was filled with herbs thought to help purify the air and keep the doctor healthy. National Geographic says that he - and his contemporaries - believed in something called the miasma theory, which stated that the plague spread through poisoned air. In the 17th century, plague doctors got an upgrade to their wardrobe that came thanks to a physician named Charles de Lorme, who was the doctor of a handful of royals, including King Louis XIII. There were various recipes, but basically it was a tonic of herbs - variously including things like wormwood, sage, rosemary, camphor, and clove - left to steep in white wine vinegar. And it may have worked: Some of the components weren't just antibacterial but repelled the insects that were causing the plague. The Farmers' Almanac says lore suggests the name - and the drink - came from a group of 18th-century thieves who robbed the homes of plague victims and drank their tonic to protect themselves from the plague. Later plague doctors would have also been very familiar with mixing up a common treatment called Four Thieves Vinegar. Plague doctors also had something called theriac in their arsenal, which was a complicated syrup made from up to 80 different ingredients. (It wasn't really, but that's never stopped anyone before.) Other options for the very wealthy or the merchant class might involve grinding emeralds into a powder, mixing them with food or a drink, and serving that up along with a dose of mercury and/or arsenic, which, yes, was deadly. If you were a plague doctor, chances were good that you were doing it because no one else wanted to or because you weren't quite good enough to have other career options.Īccording to the Ancient History Encyclopedia, plague doctors might offer their wealthiest customers a powder made from ground unicorn horn. So, what was going on with those people who did step up and apply to become community plague doctors? (Yes, those who were interested tended to apply for the job.) Generally, there were a few types of people who went this grisly route: There were medical professionals who weren't quite good enough to get a job elsewhere, or there were doctors just starting out, who wanted to get experience and to build a name for themselves. That quarantine lasted not just during the plague but afterward, too: Plague doctors would remain on the fringes of society even after the danger had passed. While they were carrying out their duties, they were forbidden from interacting with healthy members of the community and could only associate with the sick. Who were these people? Most plague doctors were hired by a town or village to care only for the people in that town. The solution was to hire a plague doctor. While the game itself does rely on luck and chance a lot, it’s what you do with the draw that matters. Yes, there is a great deal of skill involved in Solitaire. Once you’ve revealed all the cards on the tableau, it’s just a matter of time until you’ve won! After that, it’s about getting better, which is why we provide a timer to see your best time. Otherwise, build your stacks to reveal more cards on the tableau. As you’re going, place any card in the foundations as you can. You’ll be repeating these processes for the rest of the game. Plus, finding Aces in there means you can start building foundations from the tableau or from the stock as well! Remember that once you finish revealing the stock, the waste is placed back into the stock in the exact same order. The stock is a good place to fish for specific cards since you’ll know exactly what’s there. Once you’ve done what you can on the tableau, you can go through the stock. If you can find some Aces this way, that’s great! If you start filling up stacks on top of those face-down cards, it’s going to be harder to reveal them. Beginners will start going through the stock immediately, but these cards aren’t going anywhere. With those rules understood, the best strategy to begin is to reveal as many face-down cards on the tableau as you can. Also, you can only begin a new stack on the tableau with a King, and the waste pile must maintain the same order that you drew them. On the tableau, you must place cards in descending order from King to Ace, and they must alternate colors. The objective of 1 Card Solitaire is to fill your foundations in ascending order from Ace to King by suit. And remember: once you finish your foundations, you win! Now, you can begin playing! As you can see, the game is all about arranging cards in order. In this version of Solitaire, 1 Card Solitaire, you draw cards from the stock one at a time. When the stock runs out, the waste is brought back into it in the same order. The discard pile next to it is called the waste, where unused stock cards are kept in order of draw. The stack in the upper left is called the stock, which is a pile you can draw from to reveal new cards and add them to the tableau if you’re able. Completing your foundations means you’ve won the game! You must have the appropriate ace down before building on your foundations. The objective of the game is to arrange the cards from the tableau into the four suits-clubs, diamonds, spades, and hearts-in ascending order starting with the ace. When there’s an empty spot, only a king can fill it, so keep that in mind! Revealing all the cards on the tableau is an important strategy of the game. The face-down cards are revealed when there are no face-up cards in front of them. You may arrange cards in descending order on the tableau, switching between suits.įor example, here, you’d be able to move the red queen on top of the black king, but you wouldn’t be able to put the red 5 on top of the red 6. As you can see, there are seven stacks of cards, each with one more face-down card than the next. The cards on the board are called the tableau. In the settings, you can turn autoplay on and off, turn sound on and off, view your game statistics, and view the instructions of the game (just in case the following explanation isn’t enough). There are buttons to start a new game, access settings, and undo the last move. In the bottom left, there’s a timer, and your best time is on the bottom right. Once you hit play, the action begins! The game will automatically arrange your beginning setup. Currently, the space comedy from Greg Daniels and Steve Carell has a Rotten Tomatoes 40 Tomatometer. Meanwhile, Slant Magazine’s Chuck Bowen said that “the film’s major achievement is how it manages to ground possession in the reality of modern teenage life”. The film was compared to The Exorcist by Joblo’s Chris Bumbray, who said that Joe Bird’s performance of a “possessed” character is the best seen on screen since Linda Blair in William Friedkin’s 1974 film, The Exorcist. One of them, a young woman played by Sophie Wilde, gets too involved in her curiosity with the supernatural and, after one séance, unleashes terrifying forces.Īlso starring in the film are Miranda Otto, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Marcus Johnson, and Alexandria Steffensen.ĭamon Wise, writing for Deadline Hollywood, said that Talk to Me “attempts to do something new with an old idea”, adding that it “makes the crossing of infernal thresholds seem like an awful lot of fun”.
